One grocery list can connect five different weeknight dinners. If Monday uses half an onion, another dinner should have somewhere for the rest to go. This plan uses a small group of ingredients in five different ways, without requiring you to prepare everything on Sunday.
The plan is for two adults as a starting point, not a nutritionally calculated menu. Adjust portions to appetite and individual needs. It covers dinners only, with no claim about a fixed grocery total: prices, package sizes and what you already own will change the cost.
The grocery list
- Four 15-ounce cans of plain beans: two white, one black and one chickpea.
- One 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes.
- About 1 cup dry rice, 4 ounces dry pasta and four medium tortillas.
- Three medium onions, one garlic bulb, four medium potatoes and one bell pepper.
- One small cabbage, two carrots and an 8-ounce bag of spinach.
- About ¾ cup grated cheese, optional.
- Pantry supplies: oil, cumin, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt and pepper.
Check your cupboards first. Read the individual methods before buying; you may prefer bread to rice or choose a dairy-free topping. Use the list as a planning tool rather than a requirement to buy every item. Keep vegetables in usable amounts and follow their storage instructions.
Choose the order around freshness
Use the spinach early if its condition or package date calls for it. Store potatoes, onions and chilled produce appropriately rather than piling the full shop in one place. FDA’s produce guidance covers washing and storage. Cook rice fresh on the nights you need it; this plan does not require holding one batch for five days.

Use one drained can of white beans, one chopped onion, two minced garlic cloves, half the spinach and about 1 cup crushed tomatoes. Cook the onion in a tablespoon of oil until soft, then add the garlic briefly.
Stir in the tomatoes and beans with a little oregano. Simmer until the sauce thickens, adding water if it catches. Fold in the spinach and cook until wilted. Taste before seasoning. Serve with rice cooked from about half a cup dry rice, following its packet.
Set aside the unopened ingredients for later dinners rather than cooking extra portions automatically. If you have more spinach than you need, decide whether to use it in dinner two. A spoonful of grated cheese can finish the bowls, but the meal doesn’t depend on it. This is the saucy dinner in the plan; tomorrow’s pasta will use a softer vegetable base.
