Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

Educational Qualification A candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized University or possess an equivalent qualification. Final year appearing candidates are also eligible to register.
Age Criteria (as on 01/08/2026) Minimum 21 years and maximum 32 years (General/EWS). OBC: 35 years (7 attempts), SC/ST: 37 years (Unlimited attempts).
Number of Attempts General Category: 6 attempts. OBC/EWS: 9 attempts. SC/ST: Unlimited within age limit.

Pay Scale & Allowances

Officers appointed through the Civil Services Examination start at Level 10 of the 7th Pay Commission with a starting basic salary of Rs. 56,100 per month, rising to Cabinet Secretary Level 18 (Rs. 2,50,000 fixed). Additional allowances include Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), official vehicle, security, and government accommodation.

Selection Process & Examination Pattern

  1. Civil Services Preliminary Exam: Objective Screening: GS Paper 1 (200 marks, cut-off determining) and GS Paper 2 CSAT (200 marks, qualifying at 33%).
  2. Civil Services Main Examination: Descriptive written examination consisting of 9 papers (1750 marks total) covering Essay, GS I-IV, and Optional Subject.
  3. Personality Test / Interview: UPSC Board interview at Dholpur House, New Delhi (275 marks). Final rank list based on 2025 marks.

How to Apply Online

  1. Visit the official UPSC One Time Registration portal at upsconline.nic.in.
  2. Complete OTR registration or log in with your registered credentials.
  3. Select ‘Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026’ from Active Applications.
  4. Fill Part 1 registration details and pay Rs. 100 application fee (Female/SC/ST/PwBD candidates are exempt).
  5. Complete Part 2 registration: Upload scanned photo, signature, and government photo ID card in prescribed size.
  6. Select your preferred examination centre and submit the declaration to download final registration slip.
